In 1844, Native American guides took William Overton and Asa Lovejoy by canoe to "the clearing" where they stopped for a break. Overton and Lovejoy thought the clearing might make a good settlement so Lovejoy agreed to pay 25 cents to file a claim with the provisional government in exchange for half the 640 acres that they believe would be available for immigrants soon. Overton was a bit of a drifter and sold his 320 acres to Francis Pettygrove for about $50 which was the first of the townsite tract. Early on there was a lot of confusion over ownership of property which had to be settled in court. Pettygrove and Lovejoy ended up "snapping a copper" which was "flipping a coin" to decide the settlement's name. Pettygrove ended up winning the toss and so he named the area Portland after the town he lived in Maine. If Lovejoy would have won the toss, the name of the town would have been Boston. |
