President Lincoln granted land claims for the earliest homesteads in Gladstone area. Immigrants came in 1841. The area's Indians, who operated a ferry across the Clackamas River lived alongside the white settlers. The famous "Pow-Wow" maple tree marked the place where the different Indian tribes met to make trading agreements, settle affairs, and conduct wedding ceremonies. The tree still stands on Clackamas Boulevard. Harvey Edward Cross was the founder of the City of Gladstone. He named it after a British Statesman he admired, Sir William Ewert Gladstone. The city was formally incorporated on January 10, 1911. |
