City History
|
In 1847 the grandson
of Daniel Boone, Alphonso Boone, established the Boones
Ferry which crosses the Willamette River and with that a
community called Boones Landing began and later became
Willsonville in 1880, named after the postmaster Charles
Wilson. By 1890 the railroad had reached town and the
city began to develop further. The first school was
built in 1880 and was a single-room building called
Wilsonville Grade School. In 1897, 12 school districts
merged to create a single district in which Wilsonville
was a part of. In 1912, a new 2 room school house was
built to replace the 1 room school. The two room school
was replaced by a modern school in the mid 1900.
In 1963 the only house in Oregon designed by architect
Frank Lloyd Wright, the Gordon House, was built near
what is not in the Charbonneau area. This house was
moved to the Oregon Garden in 2001. Wilsonville flooded
in 1964 and in 1966 the first fire station was built and
the city was incorporated in 1969.
In 1973 Tektronix built a campus in the city which was
later sold to Xerox. In 1988, the city opened its first
library and it was expanded to nearly 4 times in size in
2002. Due to the continual growth of the city,
Wilsonville high school was built in 1992.
Wilsonville was
originally founded as Boones Landing and it was not
until 1880 did it become Wilsonville. Boones Ferry Road
was the most popular road going north and south and
since it was fairly level, it was easy for work animals
to move cargo and people. People traveled east and west
mainly by boats on the Willamette River. If you did not
own a car, you could travel by railroad. The city was
incorporated in 1969. |
