Guide to Walkability in Portland, Oregon

If you prefer walking to get where you want to go, Portland has some terrific neighborhood for doing just that.   A report from George Washington University in 2016, rated Portland number 7 on most walkable places to live in the country.  These results were derived from statistics relating to the share of office, retail, and multifamily rental space in neighborhoods designed especially conducive to walking.  Some of our best neighborhoods for walkability include:

  1. The Pearl District is adjacent to downtown Portland and has a worldwide reputation for urban renaissance, a regeneration of population and vitality in a once tired outskirt of town.  This vibrant area features high end new condos as well as funky renovated warehouses.  Living in this area will allow you to walk to fabulous restaurants, unique boutiques, the world largest used bookstore, art galleries, breweries, and much more.    Walk Score of 96.
  2. Downtown is also a most walkable neighborhood as it is in the center of the city.  This area features beautiful historic buildings, museums, nightlife, shopping, festivals and events, farmer’s market, waterfront, Portland State University, and Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU).  There are many high rises as well as waterfront condo living lifestyles in this bustling community. Walkability 95
  3. China Town also known as Old Town is home of the popular Lan Su Chinese Garden and many of the oldest historic architecture in Portland.  This area, while a good area for walkability, it also features the most accessibility to public transportation and bike friendly roads.  One can easily walk to shopping, galleries, great dining, and the world-famous Voodoo Doughnut’s first store. Walkability 95.
  4. Goose Hollow is located on the east side of Downtown and offers a more affordable real estate and family friendly neighborhood.  If you love the outdoors, you can enjoy Washington Park with the spectacular rose gardens, Oregon Zoo, Children’s Museum, Forestry Center, Vietnam Memorial as well as miles hiking trails through Forest Park. Walkability score 92.
  5. The Northwest District is noted for large Victorian homes along 21st and 23rd street with many eclectic shops and restaurants.  Forest Park, a huge urban forest reserve is blocks away with easy access to miles of trails.  Residents also love to stop in at Salt and Straw, the west coast’s most famous ice cream chain because of all their unique flavors. Walkability score 92.

If the hustle and bustle is not for you but you like to walk, there are many nice areas all over Portland and suburbs with walking trails and easy access to coffee, market, shops, or even mass transit.  It is not that hard to get by without a car depending on where you live and what your lifestyle is.Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District in Beaverton is one of the best for offering walking trails close to most neighborhoods.
