Guide to Oregon's Rivers for Rafting & Kayaking

Rafting Kayaking Rivers

There are a number of rivers in Oregon which provide for very scenic and adventurous rafting experiences.

The fast flowing Umpqua River, north of Crater Lake has exceptional Class III and IV whitewater. It has more rapids per mile than any other Oregon river. You can take guided tours through Oregon whitewater Adventures. One and two day trips are available starting at the Gravel Bin Boat Landing which is 1.3 miles past Steamboat Inn, approximately 40 miles east of Roseburg on Highway 138.

Grande Ronde River is another river that Oregon Whitewater Adventures provide guided tours. This river makes its way through ancient lava flows and eventually joins the Columbia River. The forests provide for amazing sightings of birds and wildlife. The river is gentle enough to allow for opportunities to take pictures, bird watch, or stop and hike or swim. For the Oregon Whitewater Adventures guided tours they start at the Minam Store located at the confluence of the Wallowa and Minam Rivers on Highway 82, approximately 35 miles northwest of La Grande, Oregon.

McKenzie River offers opportunities for both beginners and experienced rafters. The Upper McKenzie offers non-stop action on a fast paced continuous narrow stretch.

The John Day boasts the longest undammed river in the Pacific Northwest at 280 miles. You will be treated to incredible scenery and unspoiled beauty impressive cliffs more than 3,000 feet high above the river. The John Day is also a favorite for bird watching and there is winter steelhead and bass fishing. A popular section is a 69 mile section from Clarno to Cottonwood with Class II whitewater.

Owyhee River in southeast Oregon is best rafted in spring when high mountain snows melt. The river offers amazing scenery from the remote desert wilderness. You will see beautiful rock formations and a variety of birds and wildlife. If you would like a guided tour the Oregon Whitewater Adventures puts in at Rome located on Highway 95 East, between Burns Junction and Jordan Valley.

The Deschutes River is the best known river in Oregon. The Deschutes offers hot days, clear skies, cold water and Class III and IV rapids.
