Oregon Lottery History:
The Oregon voter's passed an initiative in 1984
to support economic development and job creation
throughout Oregon by using lottery profits.
Lottery proceeds have funded education, economic
and community development across the state, as
well as the environment. By Oregon law 84%
of total revenues must be returned to the
public. Of the 84% returned 50% of that
must be in the form of prized and the rest of it
is to be used for public purposes authorized by
the voters. Sixteen percent is the maximum
that can be used for expenses within the Oregon
Lottery. Currently the expenses are 2.8%
of revenue. The Oregon Lottery receives no
tax money or other revenue and is totally
sustaining on it own.
Oregon Casinos:
Oregon Casinos are operated by Native
American tribal councils, which are
sovereign nations. By Oregon law,
revenues generated by the casinos must
finance tribal government operations,
the welfare of tribal members, economic
development and support charitable
contributions among other needs.
Casinos help support the local economies
throughout the state by becoming visitor
destinations. This provides jobs not
only at the casinos but at other
businesses as well.
