Sailing in
Oregon's Great Waterways

The Columbia River Gorge has the most
consistent wind in the Northwest. The
famous winds of the Gorge are driven by
the temperature gradient between the
desert to the east and the Pacific coast
to the west. It is a very popular area
to sail and only a short drive from
Portland. Besides all the places to sail
in Oregon,
there
are a number of places in Washington
available for good sailing as well. The
Puget Sound area is a very popular area
for sailing. The following are a list of
nice places to sail in Oregon. Following
that are websites of sailing clubs,
sailing schools and race information.
The Columbia around Portland offers a
close yet nice cruise from the
Interstate Bridge to the east end of
Government Island. The winds are ideal
for sailing upstream and you can see
views of Mt. Hood as well. Government
Island has several good anchorages for
overnight stays as well as places to
stop for lunch.

winds and the opportunity to take your
boat out in the ocean.

Ashland has steady winds, plenty of open
areas and a lively sailing community.

sailing opportunities. Two popular yacht
clubs host race series throughout the
